Anna’s 18th & Mike’s 25th Birthdays

May 18, 2006 8:31 am

Since I had to leave the Cape in the early morning of my birthday, we had a joint birthday celebration on Anna’s birthday the night before. It was great to have 2/3 of the family together, which is a pretty good turnout for such short notice! As for presents, Anna & I shared the new deck lights :) She also got an awesome flute (which she hasn’t quite mastered yet) and a beautiful hand-painted Turkish clock. I got a very decorative (and functional!) NARGILE (a type of Turkish hookah) which we did not have time to test.. As always, check out the photos in the gallery! In order for the Harrier jets to land at night, we need to add some lights to the runway.. We decided on some low-voltage accent lights in addition to some regulah lights. We think there will be about 30 installed by the time we are done tomorrow! We also added some new switches to the right of the door to the deck.. Check out the photos!

Mother’s Day 2006

6:23 pm

We’re just back from Grandma’s house in Worcester where we spent a few hours of Mother’s Day. We had some turkey, some ham, some potatoes.. and some raki! We were even able to videochat with Alex and Mary in Istanbul - it was pretty cool. Log in and browse to the Gallery to view the photos!

NJ Firefighters Build a Playground

May 8, 2006 9:42 am

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long while since my last post.. Here are some photos from a very cool little side project that I had been working on up until last week - twenty New Jersey firefighters spent a week in Bay Saint Louis, MS building a playground for a K-3 elementary school whose facilities were totally destroyed by Katrina (the school is in modular units and eighty percent of the children are living in travel trailers). The pictures are the old playground, the new playground (the first completely handicap accessible playground in Mississippi!!), and the neighborhood surrounding the school where most of the children live. These photos were taken in the last 2 weeks, more than 8 months after the storm.

Neighborhood around the school The Playground! Playground site before firefighters

In other news, I’m headed back to the Cape for the weekend and two days to see Tommy, Kathy, Anna, Grandma and Hershey! I’ll be sure to post an entry and some photos from my ‘vacation’!

wrong2.jpgTchoutacabouffaI saw this picture of dogs being rescued from New Orleans shortly after Katrina (left) and thought it was great. I wonder what happed to our little chihuahua Tchoutacabouffa aka Bouff (right)…

A staff house!

January 15, 2006 12:56 pm

Happy to say we’ve finally found a house for staff here in Mississippi! I think we all feel a bit conflicted about it though; the donated office space we’ve had for the past few months really feels like a home to us. The air mattresses and the shower out on the driveway have treated us well. On the other hand it will be great to be closer to where most of our programs are and to have an actual building to ourselves! Here’s a picture of the shower in Moss Point that we’ll be leaving behind.
